Don’t Stop Believing in the Journey

The ball drops at midnight on December 31st, and it’s officially 2015. Another new year is here, with new resolutions and old habits. I’m sitting in my living room, waiting for my girlfriend to get off work, and I’m curling an 8oz Budlight while I evaluate my life as “Jason Static.” Thirty-six years old, originally from Brooklyn, NY, and now residing in sunny Orlando, FL. Full-time Master Trainer at LA Fitness and a part-time independent professional wrestler. I’m in good shape, but not my best shape, and a little beaten and banged up from two surgeries, one a ruptured patella tendon and the other a torn pec. These were very painful and powerful lessons on maintaining a positive mental attitude and an even stronger spirit.

I know already that my passions are pretty simple: bodybuilding and professional wrestling. However, as I sit alone in silence, I looked to a deeper place to identify where I draw my inner peace and happiness. I was feeling confused at this point in my life because my interests were changing, and I did not understand why or how. From age 5, I dreamed of being a professional wrestler, going to all the local shows with my Mom. I toyed around with karate, then with baseball through high school and college. I started weight training to get better for baseball but a fringe benefit was I was getting more attention for muscular development, which helped me realize one of my passions for the sport.

Back then, my old American Legion coach suggested I become a personal trainer. He inspired me to show others how to get in shape while making an honest living doing it. I call it passion with a paycheck. I began in 1999 working in the gym business. From hole-in-the-wall hardcore gyms to the top corporate franchises, I worked the front desk, sales, management, and training. As I reflect on this New Year 2015, I realize a huge part of my life has been lived in the iron houses of health and fitness.

In my early 20’s, I competed in the INBF, placing in the Top 5 in all of my competitions. I enjoyed the experiences and received a lot of attention. I made some contacts. They say thoughts become things, and as I thought about my other passion for wrestling, I decided to start full-time training to fulfill one of my childhood dreams of being a professional wrestler. Jason Calabrese was reborn as Jason Static. I came up with the name Static from the band Static-X. I traveled to many states I’d never seen before and met many different types of people. I wrestled outdoors, at flea markets, carnivals, school gyms, and major arenas for no pay, small pay, or even a slice of pizza. I moved away from home twice to pursue the dream, once to Louisville, KY for 3 months working in a Walmart in the morning and hitting the weights or wrestlers in the evening, and the second time to Florida.

After about 4 years of wrestling anywhere I could, I sent my resume and pics to the big boys. Before you know it, I finally stepped foot in a WWE ring but did not receive a contract. I’d been wrestling for 13+ years, but I started to blend in as a regular wrestler through slacking on the health and fitness lifestyle. My workouts were not challenging enough, my nutrition wasn’t clean enough, and my mental game wasn’t clear enough. I look back and realized that I was at the right place at the wrong time mentally and maturity wise.

Thanksgiving week in 2009, I packed up my luggage, taking only a goal card and 3 paychecks with no savings, and flew one way to sunny Orlando, FL to pursue wrestling. I was determined to take out the trash of my bad habits and become stronger mentally and physically. I enrolled in Team 3D Academy located in Kissimmee, FL. It’s run by very successful professionals: Bubba Ray and Devon Dudley, the Dudley Boys! Team 3D also has a very unique personal trainer, Dann Carr. “Apache Dann” is a damn drill sergeant at heart, determined to break you down and build you up into a warrior! That was exactly what I needed.

I started working at LA Fitness and rebuilt my life little by little. I started over for the better, with new places and faces. It took a while, but I was starting to become who I wanted to be, doing what I wanted to do, and having what I wanted to have. Meanwhile, the teachers at Team 3D were re-shaping me as an athlete. Their unique styles and war stories help develop a wrestler deeply. You can definitely tell the difference between a 3D wrestler and any other wrestler, by not only his skills, but his knowledge and respect. I remember Bubba saying that you have to make agents and producers do a double take over you. Capitalize on your strengths, be unique and try to improve or, if not, hide your weaknesses.

So my question on the first day of 2015 was what does Jason Static have to offer the pro wrestling business? Better yet, what is Jason Static’s purpose in life? What are my strengths? The answers began shooting at me straight from God to my gut. God pointed to my strengths and skills in personal training, weight training, and pro wrestling. I realized my passion IS my purpose: to influence people in a positive way, by entertaining and coaching in the fitness lifestyle. Forget about the wrestling business as a business – this was my purpose for life in general in this Universe.

After wrestling started pulling away, I decided to get back what I once had. No, not my hair (I wish!), but my powers. I realized this time I’m more mature. I decided to temporarily take time off from wrestling to heal my hurt heart from constant rejection and heal my body from bumps and body slams. I wanted to clear my mind and do some soul searching. I ran into a buddy from the gym I work at, and he was telling me about his first show doing men’s physique. I started asking questions, and he was encouraging me to give it a try, with a lot of confidence in me that I would well.

I went home and thought about it. The seed was planted. Thoughts and feelings started to brew like a fresh pot of hot coffee. I began to do more research until I realized myself that I’m worthy enough to step back on stage after 10+ years. I decided to contact an old pal from work named Darren Barnes, along with his girlfriend Maria Martinova, who began a new competition group named TeamHD. He took me in as the first ever guy to be coached for men’s physique. I promised him I’d give it my all, listening, learning, taking actions, and winning! So here I am, preparing for my first competition. The date is set for May 16th in Panama City, FL for the NPC Riptide Classic.

I learned life is a daily journey, and success starts with a single step and a belief you CAN. My goals and perspectives have changed a bit since being more aware in general. When people see me and hear my story, I want their attention. I want them talking, curious, and motivated. I want them inspired and asking for guidance. I want to travel and touch many lives in a positive way. Most importantly, I want to have fun! Even though that night in May will be a competition of physique comparisons, my spirit is strongly ready to manifest its power physically. I’m ready to create, show, and tell a true and unique story of my fitness lifestyle unlike any other!
